Snapchat Launches Sunglasses and Rebrands as Snap Inc.

In an announcement on their brand-new website, Snapchat decided to branch out by entering the competitive realm of tech devices with their newly launched line of video-enabled sunglasses. Snapchat also revealed that the company has changed its name to Snap Inc. but the app will still be called Snapchat.

The reason for this change, according to CEO Evan Spiegel, is because Snapchat is bigger than just an app on your phone.
Spiegel said, “Now that we are developing other products, like Spectacles, we need a name that goes beyond just one product — but doesn’t lose the familiarity and fun of our team and brand.”
These Spectacles will be used to create memories and will come in three different colours. The glasses are equipped with tiny cameras on each lens to capture video in a 115-degree field of view, the same field that the human eye has.

The new Spectacles will be hitting the market “soon” and since the only purpose of Spectacles is to capture short videos, Snap’s Spectacles will only cost about $130.
Although, Snap Inc. isn’t the first company to get into the wearable technology market. Google once attempted a wearable video recording device called Google Glass, which was scrapped last year after it didn’t take off nearly as well as Google hoped it would.
So if you’re looking for a reason to get this new product, Snap Inc. explains the ease of the wearable tech which is way better than pulling out your phone and waiting on the app to launch before taking a video.
Spectacles could be the next hot thing to happen in the wearable tech market but do you think it’s worth your money when you can have essentially the same thing for free on your smartphone?
